Gilly Sperryn, whose husband Richard (1942 -2006) had looked after James Sperryn's testimonial letters and much other material, knew nothing of the sale when asked about it in the summer of 2010.

James Browning Sperryn sailed from India for the UK in the autumn of 1855 with at least five testimonals. The transcriptions given below were made by Richard Sperryn with a few later additions. Can you unscramble any more words?

His pension document is dated 8.April.1856.
The Indian Mutiny occurred in 1857 mainly among the Bengal Native Infantry. The mutiny occurred in Bareilly (base of the 68th) on 31.May.1857.
In 1858 the East India company's military responsibilities were taken over by the British government and the company dissolved on 1.Jun.1874.
